What is Content ID?

What is Content ID

Content ID is a digital fingerprinting system that Google made. It makes it easy to find and manage content on YouTube that is protected by intellectual property rights.

Without it, piracy would be at an all-time high. Arrgh!

When a video is uploaded, it is compared to the database, and if there is a match, it is marked as a copyright violation.

Here is the full timeline for Content ID:
  • June 2007 - YouTube invested in automated copyright detection
  • June 2007 - YouTube named it "video identification" then later Content ID
  • September 2012 - Over 1/3 of monetized views were from Content ID
  • July 2014 - YouTube paid over $1 billion in Content ID revenue
  • July 20176 - YouTube paid over $2 billion in Content ID revenue

This is a great way to make money from my music without additional work!

As you can see, there have been many ups and downs in the system.

Overall, for creators like you & me, this is a great step toward a future with less. artist exploitation.

It's smart to use technology in a way that advances creativity while offering full autonomy to users.

what is the difference between copyright and content iD

Music Copyright VS Content ID

Copyright is your legal ownership of intellectual property, and content ID is the system that protects it. YouTube and Google use Content ID for copyright protection.

It is 100% possible to own copyrights and not have Content ID...

In fact, this is the reality for most newbie artists.

To claim your content ID, you can't be a lazy bum!

It's a manual process that requires you to select it within the distribution platform.

If you ever get an A&R Music Job then your role is to oversee royalty collection!

How YouTube content ID monetization works

How Content ID Works

When someone uploads a video to YouTube, it's cross-compared to audio and video files that the content owner has registered with Content ID to see if there are any matches.

This takes a few hours, but it is nearly a hundred percent accurate!

If copyrighted works are being distributed then YouTube files a copyright claim, then lets earnings flow to the rightful owners.

Basic system, eh?

YouTube only gives Content ID to people who own the rights to the content and meet certain requirements.

To be approved, they must own the rights to a lot of original content that is often uploaded to YouTube and for which they have exclusive rights.

Using a Music Distributor is the easiest way to enter the Content ID platform.

YouTube also tells you how to use Content ID clearly.

We keep an eye on Content ID use and disputes to make sure that these rules are followed!

Copyright owners who make a lot of false claims can lose their Content ID access and their relationship with YouTube.

Get Your Own Music Studio Booth (For Under $500)

Studio Booth

This image above (with the portable music studio) ☝️ is the BEST resource for musicians!

It's astonishing that such a sizable booth can be folded up and moved with such ease, then re-erected anywhere you choose using a home recording booth.

Buying this $450 booth saves you thousands in studio time fees.

Here are the benefits of this portable music studio:
  • This little studio booth is ideal for use in tight quarters (dorms, rooms.)
  • The soundproof booth is useful for reducing echo and other background disturbances
  • The end result is perfectly dry and clear vocals
  • You save thousands in studio time and specific equipment

Portable Music Studio

The goal of every recording session is to capture a dry, noise-free signal, and a portable voice booth is the perfect tool for doing just that!

Instead of having a voice booth permanently set up in a studio, you can simply fold it up and put it away when you're done using it.

Ever since my producer bought one of these... Life became 100x better.

How to collect YouTube Content ID royalties

Collect Music Royalties with Content ID

Your music distributor grants you access to seeing and withdrawing Content ID royalties.

At the end of every payment cycle, the distributor gets statements on your behalf.

Those statements will then show up in your account!

Many Music Supervision Companies can collect royalties for Sync Licensing across many platforms.

There are many sides to getting published.

Note: not every distributor has the same payment cycle. Some pay in months, and others pay in weeks!

Even if you haven't officially released your song yet, you still have the right to use it.

If you can Land Your Music on Netflix then it's just as beneficial as Content ID!

It's in your best interest to set up Content ID before your release so you don't miss out on revenue!

Content ID Prices

Now that we've got the bulk of Content ID down, it's finally time to get your hands on a service that will give it to you!

Top 4 Content ID services:

  1. Boost Collective
  2. TuneCore
  3. United Masters
  4. DistroKid

With these services, you can publish your music on YouTube and get a content ID.

(Note: some of these services collect Music Publishing Royalties while others don't.)

That said, I don't want you to go broke...

You need to understand the costs before getting into this.

Boost Collective: 100% Free Forever

This is a great way to start the list!

Boost Collective does not charge a cent to distribute your music through Youtube Content ID.

In fact... They don't charge at all for their 100% Free Music Distribution.

We decided that we are freakin' over it with stupid paywalls.

Why should artists be exploited just to have the CHANCE at making money?

Something ain't adding up... So we're here to change that.

Tunecore Price: $9.99 + 20% fee

Artists can choose to make money from their own YouTube channel and even have Content ID enabled with TuneCore.

Now, I've spoken about TuneCore a few times so this isn't my first rodeo.

The Content ID integration is linked with the purchase of an independent song release and artists get to keep 80% of the money generated.

United masters: $4.99 or 10% Fee

Now, the United Masters distribution platform gets mixed reviews.

Many people like tin, and others complain that they have really bad support...

Regardless, I'm not here to discuss the in-depth. I'm here to explore their YouTube Content ID options.

From the get-go, there isn't much public information regarding their fees.

It's safe to say that the distribution fees cover Youtube Content ID.

This alone makes United Masters a wonderful DistroKid alternative!

DistroKid: $4.95 + 20% Fee

The YouTube content ID is a service from Distrokid that pays you when someone else uses your music in a video.

There are many reasons to love and hate Distrokid.

This is YouTube's system for keeping track of when your work shows up in a YouTube video.

For one, I am actually not a main hater. When I started releasing music on streaming platforms it was through DistroKid.

Over time though, greed has corrupted this company...

They lost their values and weren't fully corporate.

Just look at the video below for clarity on what I am talking about. 👇
